ID Verification: Best Practices That Protect Your Commission
Most notary problems start with one thing: identity. This guide helps you slow down, verify correctly, and document your process.
Your job is not to be suspiciousits to be consistent. A calm, repeatable ID process protects your client and protects your commission.
The 4 checks I recommend
- Validity: current ID (not expired). If its expired, stop.
- Photo match: do they match the photo today?
- Name match: does the name match the document exactly?
- Tampering: look for altered edges, peeling laminate, or odd fonts.
Red flags to take seriously
- Signer refuses to show ID clearly
- Signer seems coached or rushed
- Document details dont match the ID
- Something feels off trust your instincts and pause
For RON sessions
Remote sessions add extra steps like credential analysis and KBA. Make sure your signer understands the process before the appointment so youre not troubleshooting under pressure.
